Pomegranates

Pomegranates are originally from the Mddle East where they are believed to be the fruit from Adam & Eve fame, not an apple. They are an ancient fruit with much religious and historic significance. In Jewish tradition they were though to always contain 613 seeds which corresponded with the 613 commandments of the Torah. They also feature in Greek mythology. A pomegranate contains about 40% of your RDA of Vitamin C, it is high in folic acid and antioxidants. Pomegranates are also thought to be good for your heart and blood pressure, reduce the risk of prostate cancer and osteoarthritis.

What do I do with it?

If you cut a pomegranate open, you can see all the little red seeds, this is the bit you eat. To separate you can scoop the inside out into a bowl of water where the seeds will sink and the white bit will float. Alternatively, cut it open and eat the seeds with a toothpick, time consuming but can keep kids busy! The juice can stain clothing.

The seeds can be eaten as they are as a snack or added to salads or yoghurt.
